According to Richard Field, pragmatism says "inquiry should not be understood as consisting of a mind passively observing the world and drawing from this ideas that if true correspond to reality[4]'.
It was a more a practical approach to saying that not only passively observing the world to conduct research, but rather to actively engage in it. As Field states, "active manipulation of the environment to test hypotheses".

Dewey's writing during this book is long and extensive. The summary of his works encompasses the ideas of pragmatism at an early stage. This meant, according to Godfrey-Smith in John Dewey's Experience in Nature,"...relationships between cognition and the environment of the thinker." [3]
