    Hildengard of Bingen

    Hildengard of Bingen
The piece of art I chose for this artist is called First Vision Fiery Life-Force. Hildengard was known to have visions since the age of 3. Her visions caused her to see humans as “living sparks” of God’s love, coming from God as daylight comes from the sun. I see what appears to be an angel being born from a dark figure with God’s head as a sort of halo. The emotion in this piece for me is that of unease, the use of red for the skin makes me think of evil rather than the living sparks described.

    Herrad of Landsberg

    Herrad of Landsberg
The piece of art I chose was her self-portrait from Hortus Deliciarum. In this self-portrait I see the artist and she appears to be holding a scroll, what is written I do not know, but since the Hortus Deliciarum is a guide for young nuns I would imagine it would be a set of rules or guidelines young nuns would have to follow. The woman in the self-portrait doesn’t seem to hold any particular emotion, so for me it is difficult to see what the artist was thinking for this particular piece.
