The founding of the Virginia Company
The Virginia Company refers collectively to a joint stock company chartered by James I on 10 April 1606 with the purposes of establishing settlements on the coast of North America. -
Founding of Jamestown
In 1607, 104 English men and boys arrived in North America to start a settlement. On May 13 they picked Jamestown, Virginia for their settlement, which was named after their King, James I. The settlement became the first permanent English settlement in North America. -
African Slavery
In 1619, just 12 years after Jamestown was found, slaves were brought in from Africa to do the hard work and labor that the white man did not want to do. -
Voting Rights
In 1790, law was passed that only white males who owned land could vote. Land was still expensive and not many people owened property back then, so only the wealthiest of men could vote. -
