The sensorama was invented in 1956 by Morton Heilig and was patented in 1962. There was full color 3D video audio vibrations atmospheric effects such as wind and even smell. this was all created scent producers vibrating chair stereo speakers and stereoscopic 3D screen. -

Ivan Sutherland with his student Bob Sproull created the first virtual reality HMD named The Sword of Damocles this head gear was connected to a computer. It was never made developed beyond a lab project because it was to heavy for people to comfortably wear. they had to be strapped in because it was suspended from the ceiling. -
