  • Moving

    Van gouh in 1882 moved from his parents house, from Etten to the Hague. Here he received formal instruction from his cousin, Anton Mauve, a leading artist in Hague School. At this time, Van gouh started to venture into color and made his first oil painting. He was 28 years old.
  • The potato munchers

    While living with his parents in Nuenen, Van Gogh In the winter of 1884-85, painted peasant heads more than forty times, which helped create his first multifigure, large-scale composition, the potato eaters. This was a gritty painting of a peasant family eating their dinner. Van Gogh wrote that they "have tilled the earth themselves with the same hands they are putting in the dish.”
  • A lot of paintings

    In February 1888, Van Gogh went to the south of France, hoping to establish a community of artists. There he painted 14 paintings of orchards in less than a month. One of his paintings in particular suggests that he may of been influenced by Japanese prints. This painting was called 'The Flowering Orchard
  • Removal of the ear

    In December 1888 Van Gogh had a mental breakdown and cut off his left ear with a razor. He did this because Gauguin, who joined Van Gogh in October of the same year, abruptly departed. Gauguin and van Gogh got along well together until Gauguin left.

    After van Gogh came back from the hospital, he started working on a portrate of a wife holding a rope that rocks her newborns cradle
  • Sunflowers.

    Van Gogh painted the sunflowers in spring 1888 and 1889. He painted a series of them, although there is not a lot of information about the time period they were made.

  • Mental Brakedown

    In may 1889, van Gogh feared that he would have another breakdown and he admitted himself to a mental hospital near Saint-Rémy. Over that year, he painted over 155 paintings. he drew the corrridors of the hospital and other imagery relating to the hospital.
  • Fame after death

    After his death, van Gogh started to gather critical attention. Between 1888 and 1890, his art was displayed in Salon des Indépendants in Paris. They were regarded as 'remarkable' by many artists.

    After a year of being in the mental hospital, van Gogh left in may, 1890. He settled in Auvers-sur-Oise, near to his brother, who was in Paris at the time. For the last few months of his life, van Gogh was under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet was a homeopathic physician who was an amateur artist and was painted by van Gogh. despite having elegant healthcare for the time, van Gogh still killed himself
