This was the second major engagement in the pacific after Pearl Harbor. Before the fight the us jerry rigged the Yorktown to fighting condition. During the fight the US would sink the four Japanese fleet carriers Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū and Hiryū. Along with other ships. The US would still lose the Yorktown. It was a decisive victory for the USA. -

After Pearl Harbor the Japanese would take the Marshall Islands. During the war the us would send forces to take back the islands. The Japanese would fight fiercely and after three months of fighting the US would take the islands back. -
