    History of Jamestown 144 English men established the first Joint-Stock company in Jamestown, Virginia. The venture was harsh and bitter cold, and eventually became bankrupt in 1624. However, their discovery of tobacco proved useful to future voyagers.

    The Growth of Slavery in the U.S.These first African Americans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia. At the time, they were neither slaves, nor free men. They were indentured servents, and served their required time before their freedom was granted to them. Virginia was the first British Colony to establish slavery in the New World.

The court also stated that Congress did not have the right to prohibit slavery in any territory, as it was a direct violation of the 5th Amendment. With this decision, tensions arose between the North and South regarding the moralities of slavery.
