    The Middle Passage
    The middle passage started in 1518. This was the middle part of a 3 part voyage. This was part of the atlantic slave trade. Goods and products from Europe were taken to Africa and traded for slaves.

    Witchcraft
    A doctor determines strange behavior of teenage giels to be "witchcraft" in Salem, Massachusets. Girls were screaming loudly and barking like dogs. There was no other reasoning or explination for this behavior leaving the belief of Witchcraft.
  • The first "Melting Pot"

    The first "Melting Pot"
    Pennsylvania was considered the first "melting pot" state. The emlting pot theory states "peoples from various cultures come to America and contribute aspects of their culture to create a new, unique American culture. The result is that contributions from many cultures are indistinguishable from one another and are effectively "melted" together".

    The Stamp act was passed by the British parliment on March 22, 1765. This would tax every piece of printed paper used and the money would go to the British Parlement.

    The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson with help from Benjamin Franlkin and John Adams, among others. This was a way of declaring Americas independence from Britain during the Revolutionary war. It was signed in Philadelphia on July 4th 1776 and is known to day as the Birth date of America.

    Considered to be the turning point of the revolutionary war. British and Hessian troops surrendered against America.

    Federalism and Federalists
    Federalism definition is: Meaning "Strong, Central, Government" Federalists mean the opposite. Federalists belive in "loose and decentralized form of Government." Supporters of the constitution referred to themselves at federalists.

    George Washington was the first President of the United States, He was responisble for creating and developing main parts of the Presidential Administration. The three parts that were developed from departments already in place were secretary of the state, the treasury and the cabinet.

    There were big plans to expand the Nation westward. This would allow for acess of international markets for farm land. America ended up purchasing Louisiana as a start to weswar dexpansion. Jefferson purchased Louisiana for 15 million dollars from France.

    Exploration of Lewis and Clarke
    Part of westward expansion. Wanted to send explorers to explore unclaimed territories to grow Americas territories. Lewis and Clark were chosen to lead this exploration which began in May 1804.

    The Missouri Compromise
    In 1819, Missouri petitioned to join the US as a slave state. The would throw off the balance between salvery states and free states, making 11 free states and 12 slave states. They compromised by separating Maine from Massachusetts, mkaine Maine a free state. This evened out the balance.

    The Underground Railroad
    The Underground Railroad began in 1830. This "railroad" was a path to freedom for slaves. Slaves would flee during the night and travel fnorth rom station to station. Stations were usually either churches or or homes.
  • "The Lierator"

    "The Lierator"
    This was a book that was writtin to spread the word about anti-slavery. This book was written by Williams Lloyd Garrison in 1831 in hope to share his beliefes and vews on living in an anti-slavery world. He was known as the "voice of Abolitionism" for that generation.

    The republican party was founded in 1834. It was founded on the rule of law and rights of individuals and was opposed to spreading slavery to the west.
  • Mexican-American War

    Mexican-American War
    The Mexican-American war was fought between 1846 and 1848. The war broke out after the US annexation of Texas. The Americans won the war resulting in 500,00 square miles of territory.
  • Womens Rights Moment

    Womens Rights Moment
    The womens sufferage movement began in 1848 and lasted until 1920. This movement addressed social barries and political barries for women. These barries limited womens rights. Finally, in 1920, the 19th Amendment was made which allowed women full voting rights.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    When the Mexican-American war was one, there was debate on whether or not to allow that territory the rights to slavery. California wanted to be a free state. New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Utah were states without slavery and California was able to become a free state. as well. They also passed the fugitive slave act.

    The Emancipation Proclamation
    Abraham Lincoln issed the emancipation proclamation on January 1, 1863 to end slavery. This proved that the civil war was now being fought to end slavery. Although it didn't necessarily end slavery forever, it did change the minds of people.

    The rebuilding period after the civil war was between 1865 and 1877. During these years, many struggles were faced. Yes, millions of slaves were free but that left the South in serious need of reconstruction.
  • Presidential Reconstruction

    Presidential Reconstruction
    Also during the period of 1865-1877 President Andrew Johnson started his plans for a Presidential Reconstruction. Free slaves were still expected to follow restricting "codes" . This caused a radical republican party to form in 1867. During this time. blacks had a say in the goverment for the first time.
