  • Panama Canal

    Panama Canal
    The US desired a canal to expedite the transportation of good from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. The US and Columbia failed negotiations. Columbia ruled Panama. In 1903, the US helped Panama gain Independence. The US leased 10 miles of land from Panama to construct the canal. Construction began in 1907. In 1914, the canal was completed. It cost $345 million to construct.

    The states signed the 18th amendment to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol was thought to be evil. The prohibition of alcohol was lifted in 1933.

    The Treaty of Versailles
    The Treaty of Versailles was the official end of World War 1. Negotiations took place in Paris, France. The talks began on June 28, 1919, and ended on January 21, 1920. The treaty required Germany to accept responsibility for the war. Germany had to reassign boarders, relinquish land and pay restitution.

    The Great Depression began on October 29, 1929. The day is referred to as "Black Tuesday". On this day in history, the stock market crashed causing many investors to lose their money. Following that event, citizens became alarmed and tried to pull all their money out of banks, which lead to further economic downturns.     The bombing of Pearl Harbor happened on December 7, 1941. It was a surprise attack by Japan. The attack led to the United States involvement in World War 2. Japan struck Pearl Harbor to prevent our navy from interfering their plans to take over East Asia.

    The Civil Rights movement began with African American activism in 1954. The activist wanted the 14th ammendment to be protected. It began when the Board of Education ruled that segregation in the public schools was illega. The activists lead sit-ins, boycotts and marches, mostly peaceful in protest.

    The Vietnam War began on November 1, 1955, and it ended on April 30, 1975. The conflict was to keep communist forces from overtaking them. The war cost the United States billions of dollars, about 60,000 American died and so many were injured. With all that loss, and still, the United States did not achieve its goal.

    Feminism is really just equal rights between the sexes. It should be held to our 14th amendment, that speaks of equality for all. Women fought for and continue to fight for political, financial, personal, and social equality of sexes. A big push is for educational and professional equality. Feminists have also worked to ensure a women's right to decide, making easy access to abortions.

    The end of the Cold War came in 1991. Before that time, the US was in a standoff with the USSR between 1947 - 1991. In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev assumed the reins of power in the Soviet Union. As a dedicated reformer, no one thought he would bring the end to the Cold War. However, President Ronald Reagan met Gorbachev for a four-day summit in Russia, after that time, negoiations began and an end to the Cold War followed.
