  • Brown VS Board

    Kids in schools (white and black) said they thought white dolls were better than black dolls, giving off the impression that children were being taught that whites were better than blacks.
  • Montgomery bus boycotts

    African Americans had to sit in the back of public busses, and if asked to move by a white person, they had to do so.
  • Little Rock 9

    9 African American students enrolled in a white high school, which started riots. National Guard troops were sent in to protect the students.

    Roughly a quarter of a million people surrounded the capitol of Washington, demanding equal rights for African Americans.
  • Birmingham

    Segregated city in Alabama. Birmingham was chosen to march in because it was one of the most racially discriminated places. A bomb went off near a church, killing four children.
  • Freedom Summer

    College students came from all over the country to get more African Americans to vote.
  • Civil RIghts Act of 1964

    Bans literacy tests for voting and gives government the ability to step in where ever they feel people's voting rights are being infringed upon.
  • Selma Marches

    Protesters were beat by law enforcement when trying to cross a bridge to get to the capitol during a march from Alabama to Montgomery.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Removed literacy tests to increase other cultured voting percentage.
