    Secretary of State, William H. Steward, persuaded Congress in 1867 to buy Alaska from Russia. This was one of the first major land purchases for the United States, and kickstarted large waves of imperialism.

    The Spanish-American War
    During the 1890's American public opinion was leaning towards agressive foreign policy. Expanisionsts wanted the United States to estbalish themselves as a world power and compete among imperialist nations. This in turn, provoked President Mckinley and Cleveland to declare war on Spain. This lead to the United States control of Cuba.
