Unit 7 Timeline

  • Women's Suffrage

    (Approx date) Taking off after the first Women's Convention, major strides for women's rights began to take place. This contributed to the American Dream because women began to be considered more equal and had more opportunities, like the ability to own property.
  • Boomtowns

    (approx. date) Popping up around the time of the Gold Rush, these were towns that experience rapid growth in population and economics in a short period of time. This showed progress because they were a result of increases in population and was normally in association with resources like oil or gold.
  • Miners

    (Approx. date) Drawn by rumors of gold and silver, miners migrated west in hopes of getting rich. This contributed to movement because this brought an entire workforce to the west.
  • Cowboys

    (approx. date) Cowboys, or the men who took care of cattle, came with Ranchers in order to become more successful and have more land. This contributed to movement because it not only brought more people to the west, but animals like cows and horses as well.
  • New Immigrants

    (approx. date) Arriving around the mid-1800's, people from all over the world began migrating to America in search of new opportunities and more freedoms. This contributed to movement because people from places like China, Ireland, etc. began moving to America.
  • Elevator

    (date installed) The invention of the modern elevator is attributed to Elisha Otis, who made the design of the elevator with a brake, making the elevator safe. This contributed to progress by making the building of skyscrapers possible through this invention.
  • Homestead Act

    The Homestead Act gave anyone who settled west 160 acres of land and in return they had to stay for at least 5 years consecutively on the land before legally owning the rights to the land. This contributed to the American Dream by expanding the US and giving American citizens better opportunities.
  • Morrill Land Grant

    This gave land grants to states in order to create colleges who specialize in things like agriculture and "mechanic arts". This contributed to the American Dream by encouraging Westward Expansion and by providing further education and mastery of skills for Americans.
  • Sand Creek Massacre

    Apart of the American Indian Wars, this took place in Colorado territory that resulted in the death of up to 163 Native Americans. This caused conflict because it was a war between the Americans and the Native Americans, and caused hate and vengeful attitudes to grow.
  • First Transcontinental Railroad

    Finished in 1869, this railroad connected Omaha, Nebraska, Iowa, and San Francisco. This contributed to progress by being a technological advancement that allowed travel between states much easier and faster.
  • Telephone

    (date when first call was made) Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and owned the patent for the device. This was progress because it allowed communication despite large distances between two people, and paved the way for the modern phone to be created.
  • Refrigerator Cars

    (Approx. date)Refrigerator cars were attached to trains and allowed refrigerated items to be transported without spoiling. This was progress because it allowed perishable items to be taken across long distance, supplying food for people across states.
  • Sweatshops

    (approx date) Popping up in the late 1800s, sweatshops were work environments that were characterized by their long work hours, very low compensation, and dangerous conditions and usually involved immigrants. These contributed to conflict due to the harsh conditions that some of these sweatshops had and the effect it had on the workers. Even things like bathroom breaks were restricted, and violence was used as an incentive in many cases.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    This was a law passed in America prohibiting Chinese immigrants from entering America. This caused conflict by heightening tensions between the immigrant communities, specifically the Chinese, and white Americans.
  • Oklahoma Land Rush

    This was the first land rush into "Unassigned Lands" that took place in Oklahoma. This contributed to the American Dream because around 50,000 people attempted to get a piece of the land, which contributed to westward expansion.
  • Ellis Island

    Ellis Island, located in New York, was an immigration station established in 1892. This contributed to movement because it allowed even more immigrants to legally come to America, and in a way was a message that gave America's blessing on immigration.
  • Homestead Strike

    This strike took place in Pittsburgh, and resulted in a battle between the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers and the Carnegie Steel Company. This was a conflict because it was a battle between the workers on strike and the security guards.
  • Pullman Strike

    This was a railroad strike that reached the entire nation, and became a turning point for labor laws in America. This was a conflict because it resulted 30 deaths and 57 injuries.
  • Angel Island

    Located in San Francisco, this was another immigration station within the US.. This contributed to the American Dream by showing how people from other countries came to America in order to pursue a better life with more freedoms and opportunities.
  • Farmers

    (approx. date) Farmers and their families moved to the Great Plains to pursue cheaper and larger portions of land than offered in the East. This contributed to movement because it brought many families to the west to settle.
