    The Homestead Act signed by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862 encouraged Western migration. It provided settlers 160 acres of public land, in exchange they would pay a small fee and were required to live there for 5 years to receive ownership of the land
  • National Labor Union

    National Labor Union
    The NLU was the the 1st national labor federation in the United States. It was led by William H. Sylvis and Andrew Cameron. It was formed by unskilled, skilled workers, farmers, and reformers to pressure Congress to pass labor law reforms.
  • Immigration Restricttion Laws

    The first major United States immigration law was the Chinese f Exclusion Act of 1882. It also charged a 50 cent tax on all immigrants landing on US ports for a government immigration fund. Also had several categories of immigrants not eligible for citizenship.

    The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was approved on July 2 of 1890. It was the 1st federal act that outlawed monopolistic( complete control of supply of trade in a service/commodity) business practices.

    NAACP Founded
    The National association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded on February 12, 1909. Founded by W.E.B Du Bois among many others. It is a civil rights organization to advance justice for African Americans in the United States.
  • Native Americans Are Now U.S. Citizens

    Native Americans Are Now U.S. Citizens
    On June 2, 1924 native Americans were granted U.S. Citizenship. It granted citizenship to all native Americans born in the United States. In some states even after the Indian Citizenship act was passed could not vote because it was controlled by state law.
