    Battle Of Kawela
    In 1736, O'ahu fought with Molokai and Hawai'i. Even though the O'ahu were more powerful, the spiritual strength of the Molokai fighters won the battle after five days of fighting. The O'ahu cheif, Kapiiohookai, was killed. Puuhonua is a temple where defeated warriors could take sanctuary.

    Meeting Captain Cook
    Captain Cook first discovered O'ahu, then Kaua'i. He named the islands 'Sandwich Islands' in honor of Earl of Sandwich. After, a trade developed between the English and the Hawaiians. People started treating Captain Cook as a chief or god. The Hawaiians thought he was the god Lono that has returned.

    In 1782, Kamehameha won his first major victory in a battle called Battle of Moku'ohai. Kiwala'o was killed by one of Kamehameha's officers in the melee but Keoua escaped to the Southern part of the district.

    Kamehameha's Attack On Kaua'i
    Kamehameha's plan to attack Kaua'i involved about 7,000 Hawaiians along with 50 Europeans. They were all armed with muskets, along with 8 cannons and other Western weapons. As Kamehameha and his army was about to attempt their attack on Kaua'i, a disease swept throughout the population, killing thousands of people. Because of that, Kamehameha failed to conquer Kaua'i.

    Overturn Naha Stone
    In Ancient Hawaii, the Naha Stone was used to tell which people belonged to the ruling Naha groups. Each time a baby was born, people put it on the stone. If the baby felt calm and didn't cry, then it was Naha. If the baby ended up crying, it was not Naha. People believe that this 7,000 pound rock was brought to the Big Island from Kaua'i using a Kanoe.

    Ka'ahumanu became the first co-leader (Or Kuhina Nui) in Hawai'i. She was Kamehameha's favorite wife. However, her power went far beyond him.

They each have been giving a diificult assignments. They built houses, schools, and churches. Also, they were to learn the language of the people and teach them to read the Bible. Behind all this, they were leading the Hawaiians away from their old religion.

    Sugarcane was already a crop when Captain Cook first arrived in 1778. They were planted near Kalo patches and was used for food supply. They didn't sell it out because they didn't know what use it could make. Also, it was really valuable to Hawai'i and it was like their snack.

    In 1840, fisihing grounds in the Kodiak area (near Alaska) were being explored. The grounds in the Arctic Ocean north of the Bering Strait were discovered. Prices of whale oil and bone remained high until the Civil War. The Civil War changed whaling. The most important reason for the decay of the industry was that the cost of voyages was increasing as the herds of whales were decreasing.

    The Mahele was an act that allowed private ownership of land for the first time. This was a disaster for the Hawaiians because it would end up to ownership of land by foreigners. By 1893, foreigners controlled 90% of the land in Hawai'i. Since they owned most of Hawai'i, they wanted to take over the government. They toke over the kingdom in 1893.
