    On January 18, 1778, the English explorer Captain James Cook had washed up on the shores of Hawaii on his third voyage.When captin cook had set off his ship he had been greeted as a sacred high chief or a god because the time of his arrival was sacred time of the lono.Cook had started a trade with the Hawaiians and gave them goats, English pigs, and seeds to plant melons, pumpkins, metal, nails, and onions.In return the hawaiians gave them wood and shark teeth.

    Captin Cooks trade with the hawaiians had eneded.Captin cook had been taking to much of the hawaiians resources.On February 14, 1779, Kealakekua Bay, HI Captin Cook was killed.The king began to understand that Cook was his enemy.As Cook turned his back to help launch the boats, he was struck on the head by the villagers and then stabbed to death as he fell on his face.He was first struck on the head with a club by a chief named Kalaimanokahoʻowaha.Some of cooks crew had managed to escape.

    The Battle of Mokuʻōhai, fought in 1782 on the island of Hawaii, was a key battle in the early days of Kamehameha I's wars to conquer the Hawaiian Islands. It was his first major victory, having leadership over much of the island.The battleground was just to the south of Kealakekua Bay.At this moment, Kamehameha's forces arrived and, seeing Kiwalao held fast by Keeaumoku, stabbed the king, who collapsed bleeding on top of the ground.This war lead to the unification of hawaii.

    Liholiho ruling Period

    Liholiho and his court broke the ancient kapu when chiefs and chiefesses shared a common meal at the urging of both his mother, Keopuolani and Ka`ahumanu. Prior to this, men and women had been strictly forbidden from eating together, and in addition many foods were forbidden to women. By flaunting the laws so publicly, Liholiho's challenge to the gods could not be ignored.

    Rule of Ka'ahumanu as Kuhina Nui

    May 8, 1819, the crown was passed to his son, Liholiho, who would rule as Kamehameha II. Kaahumanu, however, revealed that her husband believed that Liholiho lacked the leadership abilities required to lead the kingdom. Therefore, Kaahumanu said, the king had created an important position for her: kuhina nui, or prime minister. She would rule as an equal with Liholiho.

    Whaling Economy

    As the Northwest fur trade decreased and sandalwood supplies and values dropped, the whaling industry began to fill the economic void. Frozen out of traditional hunting areas by the Europeans, American whaling ships began to sail farther and farther into the Pacific. In the autumn of 1819 the first whalers went out.Whales were popular for their oil.They later found out that oil could be pumped out of the groung instead of killing the whales.
