UNC Labor Movements

  • UNC Janitors' Association Established

    Though most janitors at the time were men, the primarily African American janitors at UNC created this group to discuss job-related issues, such as salaries and uniforms. This was an important stepping stone in the history of the struggle for labor justice at the university.
  • UNC Foodworkers' Strikes

    UNC food service employees expressed their discontent with wages and treatment of Black employees. The Foodworkers' Strikes began in February of 1968 and last until December of 1969.
  • UNC Housekeepers' Protest

    In March of 1980, housekeepers organized in response to harassment of Black employees and threat of being fired. Though their demands were not met, this protest resulted in the formation of the Houskeepers Association.
  • UNC Housekeepers' Settlement

    UNC Housekeepers' Settlement
    The UNC Housekeepers Association win their settlement. They received a $600 bonus and a raise of up to $1700, meetings with the Chancellor, and career training programs.
