  • battle of lexington and concord

    the colonists wanted their own self government which is why the battle took place. john parker positioned his minuteman for attack on the British in April the first shot fired was known as " the shot heard all around the world " 18 minuteman lost their lives , this battled marked the beginning of the fight for independence.
  • Declaration Of Independence

    Declares independence from Britain. It outlines our rights taken away from our colonists by the king and parliament. Written by thomas jefferson, who used the ideas of natural rights propped by john locke.
  • battle of saratoga

    signaled the french that the colonists had a chance to win the war . this battle was a turning point of the war.
  • battle of yorktown

    the american victory at this battle led to discussion of british surrender the british surrender here and and the fighting of the american revolution ceases.
  • northwest ordinance

    passed by the second continental congress.
    it was meant to address the northwest territory .
    it listed ways new states could enter the union and i believe it also stated they could not be slave states.
    also guaranteed a bill of rights in the territory.
  • virginia and kentucky resolutions

    these were political statements drafted stating that the alien and sedition acts were unconstitutional . they were authored by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson
  • Alien & Sedition Acts

    Adams Administration and Federalists congress.
    Alien acts limits immigration ( restricted activities of foreigners ) . Sedition Acts limits freedom of speech. ( reaction to XYZ affairs and outlawed any false accusations against the congress or president )
  • marbury v madison

  • missouri compromise

    this was meant to end sectional and political tensions due to Missouri entering the union because of it requesting to be a slave state. it admitted Missouri as a slave state but was later appealed by the Kansas- Nebraska act
  • monroe doctrine

    president james monroe . it was meant to warn European countries not to recolonize latin america. it depended on the british navy . it had no effect but later down the road was used as a reason for future presidents' involvement in latin american affairs.
  • nullification crisis

    John C Calhoun . ( SC v Federal government )
    it gave states the right to declare a federal law to void if it harms the state. it was passed because of a high tariff that angered south carolina. they felt as if they were unconstitutional ( the tariff acts ) despite the effort SC was left standing alone
  • texas annexation

    got it from mexico
    it only added texas.
    the independence won by texas and its willful entrance into the states demonstrates the power of the people
    the new territory sparked conflicted between north and south.
  • oregon treaty

    treaty between united states and united kingdom . set boundary between the united states and Canada at the 49th parallel . it settled the boundary dispute . signed by president james k polk it was one of the first successes of manifest destiny
  • mexican cession

    it made up most of the southwestern united states. it also completed manifest destiny.
  • compromise of 1850

    slavery became outlawed in washington DC , california was admitted as a free state . then utah and new mexico were able to decide if they were going to be a slave state through popular sovereignty ( fugitive slave law is also passed )
  • bleeding Kansas

    serious of violent events that took place between the abolitionists and those who believed in slavery within kansas territory where the two were basically in " competition " it put even more strain on the arguing going on between the north and south.
  • kansas- nebraska act

    it allowed the people of kansas and nebraska to decide if they wanted to allow slavery within their borders. it was meant to end the compromise of 1850 which didnt allow slavery north of latitude 36'30
  • battle of fort sumter

    fort sumter had been the reason behind tensions between the union and the confederacy . the first shots fired at this fort by the confederacy began the fighting of the civil war .
  • battle of bullrun

    it was the first battle of the american civil war and resulted in confederate victory .
  • battle of antietam

    the war was considered a draw and no one got the victory it was the bloodiest single day war . during this war the emancipation proclamation came about .
  • battle of vicksburg

    confederates lose control of the Mississippi river .

  • Gettysburg address

    it was a speech given by abraham lincoln at a ceremony dedicated to respecting soliders who had died during the war in gettysburg. it was a short speech but was very empowering and impacted many.
  • 13 amendment

    abolished slavery
  • 14th amendment

    birthright citizen
    equal protection
    punished confederates .
  • 15th amendment

    black sufferage ( allowed all men the right to vote )
  • plessy v ferguson

    the supreme court decision established the principle of separate but equal . overturned by brown v board
