    Bell worked on creating the telephone in Boston. He got the idea from the telegraph and wanted to make it easier.Three days after the patent came through, the first phone call was made.

    Ellis Island was the site, where millions of immigrants passed through to get into the United States. A lot of immigrants from eastern Europe came through Ellis Island. Ellis Island was open for more than 60 years.

    A spur of nationalism in Hawaii caused McKinley to push to annex the islands. Hawaii was made a territory. Dole was the first governor.

    The Tenement Act helped better the poor working conditions. The workplace had to be well ventilated and lit. There could be no locked doors and there had to be a fire-escape.

    President McKinley was shot in Buffalo, New York. He was shaking hands with the public when Leon Czolgosz shot him twice in the abdomen. He was the third president to be assassinated.

    Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne. He was shot by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a member of a group of assassins called the Black Hand.

    The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. The fight for women to vote is called women's suffrage. It took nearly 100 years for women to get the right to vote.
