    John Brown

    John Brown was a leading figure for the abolitionists and believe that violence was needed against slaveholders and government officials who believed in slavery. John Brown led the attack on Harper's Ferry as well. John Brown led to the split between the North and the South and the war because of Harper's Ferry.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, which tells the story of Tom, his life in the South, and how cruel and wrong slavery was. It led to the divide between the North and the South because it showed the evils/cruelty of slavery, and strengthened Northern abolitionism, and upset the South.
  • Republican Party

    The founding of the Republican Party was led out by abolitionists in the Northern States that wished for the expansion of slavery to be stopped. The Republican Party led to the split between the North and the South and the war because of the beliefs of the political party.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act was a law that repealed the Missouri Compromise, by allowing popular sovereignty in Kansas and Nebraska, which allowed the citizens of those states to decide whether it was a slave state or a free state. The Kansas Nebraska Act led to the split between the North and the South and the war because it created more tension between the North and the South and led to "Bleeding Kansas".

    Bleeding Kansas is the period of violence after the Kansas Nebraska Act was made where many people came into Kansas after popular sovereignty was established, and the North and South fought to maintain control in Kansas. Bleeding Kansas led to the split between the North and the South and to the war because Kansas turned into a free state, which angered the Southerners.

    The Election of 1856 was an election for the President of the United States where three people ran, James Buchanan, Republican nominee John C. Frémont, and Millard Fillmore. The winner of the election was Democrat James Buchanan. The Election of 1856 led to the split between the North and the South and the war because it created more tensions.
  • Brooks-Sumner Incident

    The Brooks-Sumner Incident was an incident in the Senate when Representative Preston Brooks, who was pro slavery, attacked Senator Charles Sumner with his cane. This led to the split of the North and the South because it showed the violence which was used and many people were influenced by that.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott was a slave who went to court to try to become a free slave, by suing the wife of his dead owner. The result of the case was that Dred Scott could not become free, or even go to court because he was not a citizen. The result of Dred Scott led to the split of the North and the South and the war because it outraged the abolitionists because of how the Supreme Court was trying to stop debate about slavery.

    The LeCompton Constitution was one of the four constitutions which were presented for the state of Kansas. The constitution was created by people who were pro-slavery, and wanted to protect slavery by excluding black people from the bill of rights. The LeCompton Constitution led to the split between the North and the South and to the war because of the political fallout afterwards.

    The Lincoln Douglas Debates was a series of seven debates between Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas, and it revolved mostly about the conflicts between the North and South, as well as slavery. The Lincoln Douglas Debates led to the split between the North and South and the war because of the arguments of both sides which upset some northerners and southerners.

    Lincoln made the House Divided Speech and presented it to the Illinois Republican convention, where he talked about and state the conflict between the North and South, and the growing tensions. The house divided speech led to the split of the North and the South and the war because he created fear in the people that the house was going to split.

    Harper's Ferry was an attack on Southern states led by John Brown. Harper's Ferry was led out to be an attempt to start an armed revolt of slaves. Harper's Ferry led to the split between the North and the South and the war because it caused any agreement to become impossible between the North and South.
