    Ponce de Leon begins exploring Florida
    Ponce de Leon was a Caribbean settler who was part of Columbus's crew. Ponce de Leon then became the governor of Puerto Rico. Then leaving Puerto Rico in search of gold and the "fountain of youth". The Easter of 1513 Ponce de Leon had discovered land later on namin it Florida ue to La Flroida back in Spain

    Cortes and the Aztecs
    Hernan Cortes and his soldiers landed on the Golf of Mexico. His goal was to conquer the Aztec Empire. The Aztec Empire thought Cortes was a message from the gods, when he was really taking over them.

    Powhatan

    Powhatan or known as Chief Powhatan, ruler of the Powhatan federation of Indians, and father of the famous Pocahontas. Powhatan did not welcome the English settlers. In 1608 his followers captured Captain John Smith. Later on releasing Smith letting him return to Jamestown.

    Jamestown colonists arrive in Virginia
    The colonists sailed 60 miles up the James River and settled in Jamestown for the start of the colony. They named the colony after King James. Another of their leaders was an explorer John Smith.

    Known as Jamestown's worst periods. Lasted from the winter of 1609-1610. During this difficult time the Powhatan Indians had been killing off the livestock's of the colonists and as well prevented the colonists from being able to hunt. With no food to eat, many English colonists from Jamestown ended up dying.

    The first English settlers to grow tobacco was John Rolfe. He had conducted experiments with tobacco to find the best way to grow and cure the leafy plants. It helped make it a very profitable to ship the crop to England.

    In July 1619 representatives met in an assembly called the House of Burgesses. Membership in the House was only allowed to while male landowners. The group had the power to raise taxes and make laws. The governor still had the power to veto these laws.

    There were many disagreements between the Native Indians and British. Disagreements that led to many wars where now we call these wars the American Indian Wars which is the collective name of the various wars that happened between these two groups of people.

    The American school system began in the New England colonies. The puritans wanted their children to read well enough so they can understand the Bible and learn a skill in trade or craft. In 1640’s the Massachusetts General Court passed education laws. One laws was to make sure that children get the proper education.

    Bacon's Rebellion was led my Nathaniel Bacon, who was a tobacco planter on the frontier. When Bacon's slave was murdered in an Indian attack , Bacon formed a group/army. His army attack ed Jamestown an then took control of the town. When Bacon died his rebellion collapsed.

    Pueblo Revolt begins in New Mexico
    The Revolt began in New Mexico, the Pueblo Revolt was also known as Popé's Rebellion. It was a rising of the Pueblo Indians overthrowing the Spanish rule in New Mexico for 12 years. Catholicism was forced on them by missionaries who burned their masks, and other sacred objects. The Indians were tried in Spanish courts and received severe punishments.
    The Revolt had killed 400 Spanish and drove out the remaining 2,000 settlers out of New Mexico.
  • Witchcraft trial in Salem

    Witchcraft trial in Salem
    In 1692 a group of girls had strange behavior and claimed to be bewitched. The girls accused several women of witchcraft including church members and a West Indian servant. The town of Salem had rumors. Hearsay led to the arrest of hundreds of people. There were 19 people were executed and others died in jail.
