Esperanza and her family move onto mango street.
This event was important as it completely changed where she lived and the school she went to which can be hard for some kids -
Car crash
Louise's stops to give Esperanza a ride. Esperanza was suspicious of where he got the car. They were near home when they heard sirens in that moment louses tells them to get out of the car and then continues to crash the car and be put under arrest
This was important to the story as it showed who Esperanza can and cant trust. -
Lunch time
Esperanza notices kids at school who get to eat their lunches in the canteen. Over time esperanza grows jelaous of these kids and eventually asks her mom to write a note stating "esperanza is too far from the canteen and is unable to walk home everyday. But because the teacher knows where she lives her mom says no.
This event is important for esperanza as it shows her that she cant always have what she wants -
new shoes
A wealthy woman gives Esperanza hand me down shoes her and her friends that also got shoes walk around the neighbor hood to show them off but unexpected people harass them later that day they throw the shoes out.
This is important for the story as it teaches them that their neighbor hood was not as safe as they thought which just gives Esperanza another reason to hate her new house. -
The dance
Esperanza mom buys her a nice new dress to wear to her cousins baptism. Esperanza later forgets to buy new party shoes so she is forced to wear her school shoes that she doesn't like. because of this Esperanza does not want to dance. later her uncle persuades her to dance and she does and in doing so she is having so much fun that she forgot all about the shoes
This is an important moment in the story as shows Esperanza to not be embarrassed of your misfortune. -
The game
Esperanza and her friends invent a game based around making fun of aunt Lupe. Aunt Lupe at the time was dying of a terminal disease. aunt Lupe was always very kind to Esperanza and told her that she should keep writing letters because it made her feel free. later aunt Lupe dies and Esperanza feels very guilty for making fun of her.
This event is important as it shows Esperanza that you should respect people -
Sally
Esperanza mets a girl named sally in school. later mirnvera comes home with bruises all over her due to her husband hitting her. She asks esperanza for help. Esperanza helps sally by saying she can stay with her as her dad beats her too
This is important for esperanza as it shows how cruel some people can be. -
Wealth
Esperanza stops going with her family to look at rich neighborhoods as she is embarrassed of not being able to afford the nice houses that she sees along the street. She always dreams of buying a nice big house and letting other people in poverty sleep in her attic as she knows what it feels like -
The garden incident
Esperanza attempts to rescue sally from a group of boys who insist they kiss her in the garden. Sally doesn't want to be rescued and tells Esperanza to go away. Esperanza feels foolish and embarrassed of this and goes to hide in the garden to cry.
This is important for Esperanza as it shows her she has to grow up. -
The confession
Esperanza tells Alicia that she does not feel like she has a home. Alicia convinces Esperanza that like it or not its her home and shell have to come back to it one day and make it better as the mayor is not going to.
This is important to Esperanza as it tells her she needs to help the people shes gonna leave behind on mango street.
