    Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858. He was the second of four children and lived in New York City. He was a sick child and suffered from asthma.

    Theodore entered Harvard College in 1876. While there he studied many different subjects including zoology and German. He also participated with boxing and wrestling teams.

    After his mother and wife's deaths, Teddy was understandably very upset. He threw himself into politics, but eventually decided to head out West to escape his grief. He left his child with his sister and moved to the Dakota Badlands. He bought ranches and cattle. He embraced the western lifestyle. After a terrible winter wiped out his cattle he decided to return back to his old life.

    Valentine's Day in 1884 was especially difficult for Teddy. His mother and wife died just hours apart in the same house. His mother, Mittie, passed away from typhoid fever. Just a few hours later, Alice Lee died from Brights disease. Here is a picture of Mittie.

    Theodore Roosevelt rekindled a childhood relationship with Edith Kermit Carow. The two of them were married in England on December 2, 1886. They moved to Long Island to raise Theordore's daughter, Alice.

    Theodore became Governor of New York after his heroic efforts from the war. Roosevelt shocked the Republican party by not following the "rules" of party leader Thomas Platt. Teddy was his own man and made sure that everyone in New York knew it.

    The Republican party nominated TR as McKinley's Vice President. He campaigned all over the country as they pair eventually won the race. A year later President McKinley was assassinated, leave Teddy to act as President of the United States.
