Colonial Schooling
-In 17th century, Boston Latin School was established as a first school in the America at the state of Massachusetts.
-All schools were linked to one religion which is called Protestant.
-They used a bible as their only textbook and taught reading, writing, and arithmetic.
-Poor children didn't get any education at all.
-Today, all children are required to get an education from K-12. If not, the parents will be taken to the court. No more religion nor bible is in the public school. -
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)
-He became a president of the U.S. (1801-1809).
-He was an author of the Declaration of Independence to educating all Americans.
-He believed that when people want to vote and choose their rulers, then they will have to learn to read and write and to learn enough to be a citizen.
-If we are still under the control of British, then there is no freedom of speech. We are required to learn how to read and write so we can vote whoever we think is the best candidates to run our country. -
Noah Webster (1758-1843)
-He was the founder of Merriam-Webster.
-He was a lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English-language spelling reformer, political writer, and editor.
-He was uncontented with textbooks from England, so he thought that Americans should learn from American books and he wrote," A Grammatical Institute of the English Language."
- We constantly learn new vocabulary daily throughout the social media, newspaper, textbooks, lectures, and conversations. -
Horace Mann (1796-1859)
-He is considered to be the father of the common school.
-His passion was to improve public schools.
-He felt that the common school would be a great equalizer for society.
-He was elected as a secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education.
-The public schools are still opening to this day and preserving the value of an education in America. Americans will do anything to keep public schools going even when tax is so expensive. Knowledge is power! -
Catherine Beecher (1800-1878)
-She was an early feminist and teacher.
-She decided that American Women should stay home and educate their children to have morals.
-In 1823, she opened the Hartford Female Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut, and trained women to be teachers.
-She devoted her life to enabling women to be more competent and contented their roles as caretakers and homemakers.
-Today, women are getting more opportunities to achieve their dreams beside the motherhood and the marriage.
