    IMPORTANT PEOPLE- Christopher Columbus
    SIGNIFICANCE- Columbus sets sail from Spain to the Americas, but really he thought he was headed to Asia. He then arrives in an island in the Bahamas. Once there, he meets Native Americans and they start trading gold.
    ESP- The Columbian Exchange began meaning the New World and Old World would trade plants, animals, & culture. The social and political effects are that the Spanish encountered Natives but then started settling there as well.
  • Roanoke Colony

    • jan 1= unknown IMPORTANT PEOPLE- Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth, John White SIGNIFICANCE- Sir Walter Raleigh sent a group of men to discover the coast of North America. They land & report their observations of Roanoke and following land which is North Carolina. Raleigh kept sending expeditions to Roanoke & when John White returned to the colony, no one was there but he only found "Croatoan" carved on a post. ESP- James I replaced Elizabeth & marchants tried to colonize Virginia.

    • jan 1= unknown IMPORTANT PEOPLE- John Smith SIGNIFICANCE- The London Company launched expedition to Virginia with 144 men aboard on 3 ships but only 104 of them survived. Jamestown was the first permanant English settlement. ESP- London Company wanted to make the colony a profitable one but kept failing. There was a Malaria outbreak which killed people. There were only 38 out of 104 people in Jamestown when a new ship came with more men. John Smith became council president in the colonies.

    SIGNIFICANCE- Despite the failures the London Company had in the beginning when establishing Virginia; they tried to reorganize. They were now the "Virginia Company". A new charter from the king allowed them to have more power and land to work with.
    ESP- They were selling & offering stock to "adventurers" and "planters". If poor you could sail free to Virginia but with an agreement that you would work with the company for 7 years.

    IMPORTANT PEOPLE- Governor George Yeardley SIGNIFICANCE- The House of Burgesses was the first legislative assembly in the colonies.
    ESP- Members would meet once a year to decide upon local laws and taxation.
  • Mayflower Compact

    IMPORTANT PEOPLE- William Bradford
    SIGNIFICANCE- They Mayflower Compact was the first document written government. Created by the Pilgrims for the Plymouth Colony.
    ESP- First written document giving an idea of a democracy.
  • Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

    IMPORATANT PEOPLE- Thomas Hooker
    SIGNIFICANCE- The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut were written by Thomas Hooker. The Orders were considered the first written constitution in the US.
    ESP- Established representative government.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    IMPORTANT PEOPLE- Nathaniel Bacon, Sir William Berkeley
    SIGNIFICANCE- When Sir William Berkeley was not failing to protect his people from Native American attacks. That is when Bacon goes against authority.
    ESP- Bacon's Rebellion still showed diffulties between the English and Native relationship.
  • Glorious Revolution

    IMPORTANT PEOPLE- Mary II and William III
    SIGNIFICANCE- When James II passes thrown to William and Mary. Rebellion outbreaks begin in New England.
    ESP- Colonies were given some rights within the empire. Did not mean they were entirely free though. Puritan leaders had to deal with Anglican worship.
  • The Great Awakening

    IMPORTANT PEOPLE- John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield
    SIGNIFICANCE- The Wesleys and Whitefield started a movement in which they were trying to convert other people into religion.
    ESP- Helped make American religion more open and diverse and made orthodox Calvinist belief stronger among Americans.
