The Spirit of Independence

  • THE SUGAR ACT

    THE SUGAR ACT
The first tax was introduced to the colonies by Great Britain for molasses. This is important because it's when colonists first knew they weren't in control of what they could or couldn't bring in.
  • THE STAMP ACT

    THE STAMP ACT
A fee had to be payed for every piece of paper used by the colonists. This provoked colonists to be very mad which led them to start thinking that only their legislators should tax them and boycotted British goods until tax was repealed.
  • BOSTON MASSACRE

    BOSTON MASSACRE
Colonists were protesting which led some of them to be killed by the red coats which felt "threatened". This had a major impact on the relationship between the colonists and Britain and also kinda started the fight for the colonists independence.
  • TEA ACT

    TEA ACT
Great Britain once again introduced a tax but now on the most popular drink, tea. Colonists are now furious that the Britains keep taxing them on things which leads them to the next event.
  • BOSTON TEA PARTY

    BOSTON TEA PARTY
To protest the colonists dumped hundreds of tea cases off British ships. The British were't happy as to they haven't made any money and couldn't get the tea back which led them to punish the colonists.
  • THE INTOLERABLE ACTS

    THE INTOLERABLE ACTS
These were acts the British passed in order to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. They not only closed the Boston Harbor but placed other acts to try and regain control of the new colonies.
  • QUARTERING ACT

    QUARTERING ACT
This was an act that was part of the Intolerable acts but expanded on this date by the British so colonists could be forced to house soldiers. This led to even more protesting and to the first continental congress so they could gain independence.
  • FIRST CONTINENTAL CONGRESS

    FIRST CONTINENTAL CONGRESS
People were mad that the Intolerable acts were placed so delegates from 12 colonies met in Philadelphia. This was important because delegates met to discuss about what to do about Britain and they learned that Britain had sent a militia.
  • SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS

    SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS
Three weeks after the Revolutionary War had started delegates from all 13 colonies met up to discuss once again. This was important because it's when George Washington got appointed to set up and command armies for battles.
  • DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE

    DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE
Congress decided it was time to declare for their independence and initiated Thomas Jefferson to write their first draft. After signing it the colonies became the United States of America and the American Revolution started which was very important due to the fact that we won the war and gained our freedom.
