    The Freedman's Bureau was established in 1865 by Congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South after the ending of the Civil War. The Freedman's Bureau provided medical aid, housing and even established schools.

    Civil War ends
    In Spring of 1865. Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. The last battle was fought in Texas, on May 13, 1865. After the Civil War, slavery was still a thing in the border states. African Americans in the non-border states still did not have citizenship and the right to vote.
