    The German workers' party was founded in 1919 by a small group of men. This included a locksmith Anton Drexler and journalist Karl Harrer. The party was a advocate for German nationalism and anti-Semitism and soon would get a supporter who would make the party very famous
  • Hitler joined the German worker's party

    In 1919 Adolf Hitler, frustrated with the state Germany was in decided to join the German worker’s party. The German worker’s party was founded earlier that same year. They felt that the treaty of Versailles was unjust to Germany for making it have to pay repetitions that it could never pay back.

    Hitler placed an advertisement in an anti-semitic newspaper in Munich, Hitler also moved the public meeting to a beer cellar that could hold one hundred people. Other party members were concerned that they would not be able to fill it, but just over a hundred people showed up.

    In 1923 hitler and his followers made a failed attempt to takeover the government in Bavaria, a state in southern Germany. Hitler thought the the “putsch” would start a large revolution against the national government.

    After the events of the failed government takeover at Munich Hitler was convicted of treason and sentenced to five years in prison, but spent less than a year at prison. The publicity around the beer hall putsch and hitler’s trial turned him into a national figure.

    From 1925-1927 the Nazi party failed to make inroads for cites and in May 1928, it did do well in the German Parliament Elections, only winning 2.6% of the total vote.

    The Nazi party started a mass movement. From 27,000 members in 1925, the Nazi party grew to 108,000 in 1929.
  • Nazi party comes to power

    In 1929 Germany entered a time of major economic depression and widespread unemployment. The Nazis used this time to criticize the ruling government and began to win elections.
  • Nazis win parliamentary elections

    A new government system was put in place and Heinrich Bruning was the first chancellor under the new system. He was not able to bring the government together and in september there was new elections. The Nazi party won this election, capturing 18.9% of the vote to make it the second largest party in the parliament.

    In January 1933 Hitler was made the German chancellor and soon his Nazi government came to control every aspect of the german life.
