    Anja suffers depression after giving birth, so her parents send her and Vladek to a sanitarium in order fof her to recover. On the way there, Vladek and Anja pass a small village and see the first signs of the Nazis.
    Anja has recovered greatly at the sanitarium, but when Vladek and Anja return, Anja's father informs Vladek that his factory in Bielsko has been robbed.

    This is the beginning of Vladek's experience of WWII. At the trenches, he kills a man for the first time. Eventually, he and the rest of the soldiers are sent to a German prisoner-of-war camp and the Jews are separated from the others. At the POW camp they experience incredibly harsh conditions.

    At the POW camp, Vladek and the other Jewish prisoners are offered work in Germany to replace the Germans sent to war. Others are reluctant to take up the opportunity, but Vladek refuses to die in a prison camp.
    Vladek also has a dream of his dead grandfather telling him he will be free by "Parsha Truma," a section of the Torah read during a specific week. The people are taken out of the camp and brought to another, but there Vladek meets an old friend and is able to return home.

    With the help of Mancie and Vladek's job as a shoemaker, Anja is brought with a group of women into Auschwitz, and she and Vladek are (somewhat) reunited.

    Vladek and a few others organize a plan to escape the evacuation, but they run out, afraid of being bombed, at the last second. They march approximately 200 miles to Gross-Rosen, and then onto a boxcar of a train. Vladek fashions a hammock out of his blanket, effectively saving his own life. The survivors of the train cars are sent back into Germany.

    At this time, Mala and Vladek are living in a bungalow in the Catskills. When she leaves, Mala takes money out of their joint bank account. Art and Francoise join Vladek in order to help him out while Mala is gone. During their stay, Art and Vladek discuss much of Vladek's life during the war.
