    Motion Images was created because a few rich guys made a bet that a horse would have all four feet off the ground at some point for $25,000. They set up some cameras and the cameras took a series of pictures of the horse running very fast. When they looked at them they saw that the horse was moving. This was the first motion image ever created.
  • Kinetoscope Parlor

    Kinetoscope Parlor
    When the few rich guys discovered moving images they created a Kinetoscope Parlor. The Parlor would feature these moving images and they profited off of it. They not knowing created the first moving picture theatre.
  • Thomas Edison's Peephole

    Thomas Edison's Peephole
    Thomas Edison discovered the Kinetoscope and created his own where only one person could watch at a time. Edison was a greedy person so he thought it would make more money then the projector that he created. Edison kept the projector secret so, he could keep making money.

    The Lumiére brothers
    The Lumiére brothers in France created a projector similar to Edisons that showed motion pictures but they called it Cinematographe. They made a lot of money from their invention and were thought to be the inventors of the projector. But, unfortunately Edison came out and said that he created it first which turned out to be true.

    Lumiére Brothers created 30-60 second short-films that were featured in a Paris Cafe and later created Vaudeville. Vaudeville was a small theatre that featured various types of Entertainment. It had singing, dancing, and the short films in between the shifts.

    Nickelodeon
    Vaudeville soon expanded to Nickelodeon(it cost a Nickel to get in). Nickelodeon was like a small store front type theatre the difference between the Vaudevilles and this was that Nickelodeon was accompanied with music and sound effects. This what Nickelodeon is named after.

    The first real movie during this time was The Great Train Robbery created by Thomas Edison and Edwin Porter. It was the first movie with a real story line and consisted of 14 scenes, lasting 12 minutes. The Great Train Movie had many different shot angles and music/sound.

    Motion Picture Patents Company
    The Nickelodeon films were attracting 52 million people per week so, Thomas Edison saw potential to create a monopoly which he did. Edison created Motion Picture Patent Company which was like studio. The MPPC controlled all of the films in the industry, anyone who wanted to make a film had to go through them.

    Independent Film companies tried to create their own films but, when they attempted to Thomas Edison and his goons came to them and smashed all of their equipment and threatened their employees; sometimes even breaking their legs and arms. Edison was like a tyrant in the filming industry. But, because of his actions a created a very competitive and lively industry.

    Once Edison started becoming a tyrant people started moving to California to create their movies. They moved to California because the sun was always shining and it never rained there while, New York was dark and humid most of the time.(People couldn't see the films) Many regular people started moving to California too because, of the weather and the abundance of entertainment.

    Thomas Edison came to California to create more movies and when he came all of the Independent films fled to Mexico to keep their equipment and their employees safe.During this time where films were big Thomas Edison didn't give credit to his actors and actresses because he didn't want to have to pay them more money for being famous. The Independent films did the exact opposite they gave credit to the actors hoping that people would like them and want to see more of them.

    During this time the actor and actress that stood on top was Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin. Mary Pickford wasn't just an actress she also, produced and screenwriter movies. Charlie Chaplin started out making $150 but later he made more than $1 million. Charlie Chaplin used his films to communicate messages of good and evil.
