It can be classified as a cyberpunk film because it depicts a near-future urban dystopia where science and technology have progressed to a dangerous level, alongside terrible environmental degradation and societal collapse.

    This novel was to be considered the first cyberpunk novel. The punk subculture started around the mid 70s in the United States and United Kingdom, so when Gibson was writing in the early 80s, it was a full-blown cultural zeitgeist. As a result, a lot of punk rock inspiration was making its way into other artistic mediums like fiction.
