    THE GLOBE THEATRE'S CONSTRUCTION
    The Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, on the south bank of the Thames river, using timber from an earlier theatre. It was probably completed by the summer of 1599 in time for the opening production of "Henry V".

    THE GLOBE THEATRE'S BURNING
    It was destroyed by fire on 29 June 1613. A theatrical cannon, set off during the performance of Henry VIII, misfired. Sparks from the cannon fire landed on the thatched roof starting a massive fire.

    THE GLOBE'S THEATRE RECONSTRUCTION
    A second Globe Theatre was built on the same site by June 1614. The replacement Globe was rebuilt within a year with a tiled rather than a thatched roof.

    The Globe was closed down by the Puritans in 1642, like all the other theatres in London.

    SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE
    A modern reconstruction of the Globe, named "Shakespeare's Globe", opened in 1997, approximately 750 feet from the site of the original theatre, with a production of Henry V.
