  • Day 1: We are a Community

Day 1: We are a Community
Introductions and getting to know you activities. Relationship building is a key process in classroom management and setting the tone for the year. Show the students right away that you care and are interested in getting to know more about them. Speak to the class about being a community where everyone plays a key role. Brief discussion about acceptable behaviours, appreciations and put-downs. Set individual goals for the year to be displayed as the first piece on the "Growth Mindset" wall.
  • Day 2: Rules/Expectations/Conduct

Elaborate on the discussion about classroom conduct. Appreciations, No Put downs! Collaboratively compose classroom rules/contract and have students sign. Discuss behaviour management/ consequences. These silent reminders will be displayed on the wall. Positives (introduce Class Dojo/incentive program). Also discuss appropriate times for washroom breaks, carpet times expectations, and other general house keeping rules.
  • Day 3: Safety

    Day 3: Safety
Discuss school safety procedures ( Fire drills, lock downs, etc) and practice together.
Introduce Zones of Regulation and do mini activity. Zones will be an ongoing weekly activity. This helps us in generating strategies to increase our time in the "green zone" (happy and ready to learn)
  • Day 4: Self Regulation and Jobs

Day 4: Self Regulation and Jobs
Time to generate a list of classroom jobs and assign workers. Workers can be assigned by random selection or volunteer. This also ties into Class Dojo as students will be paid a daily wage(points) based on task completion. Builds responsibility and together we keep our community running well. Jobs include handout helper, messenger, tech monitor, supplies monitor, and attendance runner.
  • Day 5: Communication

    Day 5: Communication

Contact information will be provided and also a link to the classroom website where they can have a peak at the great things their students are creating in the classroom.
