  • Feminism is Reawakened

    Feminism reawakened by political activism of the times. In 1950 only 1/3 women worked for wages. This was increased by 40% in the 1960's.
  • Equal Pay Act

    The Equal Pay Act is passed by Congress, promising equitable wages for the same work, regardless of the race, color, religion, national origin or sex of the worker.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Movement gained strength with the passage of this act. Prohibited discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, and gender.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

    Title VII of the Civil Rights Act passes, prohibiting sex discrimination in employment. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is created.
  • Miss America Pageant

    Women threw bras, girdles, wigs and other "women's garbage" into a "Freedom Trash Can".
  • Prohibition of Sex Discrimination

    President Lyndon B. Johnson signs an executive order prohibiting sex discrimination by government contractors and requiring affirmative action plans for hiring women.
  • The New Right

    Debated family-centered issues such as whether the government should pay for daycare with the women's movement. Led to Reagan's presidency.
  • Congress Bans Gender Discrimiation

    Included in the Higher Education Act, congress banned gender discrimination.
  • Equal Rights Amendment

    Would guarantee that both men and women would enjoy the same rights and protections under the law.
  • Choice of Abortion

    The Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that women have the right to choose an abortion during the first three months of pregnancy.
  • Housing Discrimination

    Housing discrimination on the basis of sex and credit discrimination against women are outlawed by Congress.
  • Women in Juries

    The Supreme Court denies states the right to exclude women from juries.
  • Pregnancy Discrimination Act

    The Pregnancy Discrimination Act bans employment discrimination against pregnant women.
  • Paula Hawkins

    Paula Hawkins of Florida, a Republican, becomes the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate without following her husband or father in the job.
  • Women in Combat

    The ban against women in military combat positions is removed, overturning a 1994 Pentagon decision restricting women from combat roles.
