The Eureka Stockade

    Imprisonment/fines for having no licence on the miner were still in place.
  • The Eureka Stockade begins

  • Governor Hotham comes to power

  • Intoduction of Licence checks

    Twice weekly licence checks made mandatory
  • Scottish Digger, James Scobie, murdered

    James bently (and others) murdered the scottish digger, and were soon realsed (friends of magistrate).
  • The diggers meet to bring justice to James Bently

    Resulted in Bently's hotel room being burnt the ground
  • Three men arrested over the fire

    Arrested and charged with arson for their part in the fire.
  • 1000 Diggers demand meeting

    Insist on the release of the three diggers and the the abolition of the licence and the vote for all males.
  • Forming of the Ballarat Reform League

  • 1000+ Diggers meet again

    Results in the burning of their licences. At this meeting the famous Eureka Flag, was displayed
  • Another meeting resluting in licences being burnt

  • The 'Stockade' was built

    Inside the diggers made an oath on the flag
  • The battle of the Stockade

    The authorities launched an attack on the stockade. The diggers were outnumbered and the battle was over in twenty minutes. Twenty-two diggers and five troops were killed.
  • Martial Law was declared

    Following this was a Commision into the goldfields. Thirteen diggers were committed for trial
  • Tiral from the Comission

    All thirteen men were acquitted
  • The Gold Fields Commission handed down its report

    The government adopted all of its recommendations - This resulted in all the demands of the diggers being met.
