The Book Thief

  • Liesel meets Rudy

    Liesel meets Rudy
Rudy Steiner, the rambunctious boy who lives next door befriends Liesel almost immediately after they meet. He is the ideal picture of a Nazi, exceptionally intelligent, athletically fit, and with blond hair and blue eyes. But mentally, a true Nazi would never paint themselves black with charcoal and pretend to be Jesse Owens, would never give bread to a Jew, or ever yell "I wish the Fuhrer was dead!" He is extraordinary and amazing at soccer, and the best friend Liesel would ever meet.

  • Another Stolen

    Another Stolen
Hitler's popularity gain hit big in Molching, so much that there was a bonfire to smoke anything remotely useless or related to the Jews. Liesel and her Hitler youth group were forced to attend this event, and she hated it. After the bonfire, Liesel spotted things that the fire didn't touch, and her eye caught on the book "The Shoulder Shrug". She hid this in her coat, and it almost smoked her to death. Thankfully, Hans was there to rescue her and force the truth out. But somebody saw her...
  • Washing and Drying and 8 Grande Strasse

Washing and Drying and 8 Grande Strasse
Rosa earned a small income by doing the washing and drying of the wealthier residents of Molching. Liesel often accompanied her to either collect or return the things, until Liesel was had to do it on her own. Eventually, people canceled on Rosa, leaving one customer left. The person who had seen Liesel steal that book from the fire- Ilsa Hermann, the mayor's wife. Ms. Hermann invited Liesel in one day to her library, and it was filled with wonders. Liesel visited it every time since then.
  • Max Vandenburg

    Max Vandenburg
Hans Hubermann never liked the Nazis, but he tried to join so that people wouldn't suspect that he was a Jew lover, considering he painted over a racial slur targeting Jews once. Who knew he would end up hiding one? Max Vandenburg, son of Erik Vandenburg, the man who saved Hans' life in WWI. Max had a ferocious past, and only true love and friendship had put him safely in the Hubermann's basement. Liesel developed a strong friendship built on meaningful words and descriptive weather with him.
  • Bombing Threat

    Bombing Threat
WWII was raging around them, and Allied bomber planes decided it would be fun to swoop down upon German cities while they were sleeping. And so the warning signals rang every time there was a potential threat of bombing. Liesel and the Hubermanns hid, with everybody else, in the Fiedler's basement, leaving Max behind in their own. Every time this happened, Liesel would open up her latest book, and read to the people. She comforted everybody, including herself.
  • Stealing From Her Library

    Stealing From Her Library
There came a time when Ilsa Hermann handed Liesel a letter in which the mayor explained why he had to cancel on Rosa. Liesel threw a rage, and said many regretful things. Later, when Rudy and Liesel were both looking for something to steal, Liesel had the idea to steal from Ilsa's library. One day, when the window to the library was open, Liesel slipped in, stole a book, and slipped out. She kept this up, until Ilsa revealed that she knew everything, that she was sorry, and many more things.
  • Molching Bombing

    Molching Bombing
And comes the time when Liesel loses everything once again. The warning signals were too late. She was in the basement, working on her own book, while Himmel Street was bombed from above. Everyone she knew, everyone she cared about, just snuffed out. She was the only one who survived.
  • His Sickness.. His Leave

    His Sickness.. His Leave
Max became fatally sick twice. His efforts to maintain his physical and mental health were failing, and he knew hiding his body would be hard. His left quietly in the middle of the night. Liesel almost didn't find out till next morning. Later, she saw him in a crowd of Jews who were marching to Dachau, and she tried to talk to him, to ask him why this had to happen. Even Hans was conscripted into the army for giving a Jew bread. A Nazi whipped her, and Rudy held her from going after Max again.
