He was a Spanish musician and composer considered the best flamenco guitarist in all of history.Paco de Lucia (Francisco Sánchez Gómez) was born in La Bajadilla, a neighborhood in the Cádiz city of Algeciras (Cádiz). -
THE BEGININGS OF HIS CAREER
He made himself known to the Spanish flamenco world at the International Flamenco Art Competition in Jerez de la Frontera, recording his first albums with his brother Pepe as part of the group Los Chiquitos de Algeciras. -
FIRST SOLO DISC
After having travelled through several European countries with the Flamenco Gitano Festival, he recorded his first solo album, "The Fabulous Guitar of Paco de Lucía", establishing his first contacts with the world of jazz music. -
COLLABORATIONS
He collaborated on playing with the singers Fosforito and el Lebrijano and with Camarón de la Isla. -
SOLO CAREER
After the publication of "Fuente y caudal",with his rumba "Entre Dos Aguas".In a few months it reached number one in sales in Spain and brought the guitarist closer to the general public and world recognition.
From there he began to work with international artists such as Carlos Santana, Al Dimeola, Chick Corea and Bryan Adams. -
LATER DISCS
Open to new music, Paco de Lucía abandoned the more academic flamenco with his later albums "Sólo Quiero Caminar". -
FLAMENCO-JAZZ FUSION
The album "Zyryab" is the one in which the flamenco-jazz fusion is best appreciated with the use of keyboards or pianos along with traditional instruments and the participation of artists such as Chick Corea or Manolo Sanlúcar. -
OTHER INTERESTS
He was also interested in classical music for the guitar, the result of this concern in his recording of the "Aranjuez Concert" by Joaquín Rodrigo. -
APPEARANCE IN FILMS
The friendship with the singer Camarón de la Isla, translated into the participation of the guitarist, also his brother Pepe, in his first seven albums accompanying him on guitar and in the appearance of both in the documental and musical film "Sevillanas" by Carlos Saura. -
TRIBUTES
He published "Luzía", a tribute to his mother who had died a year earlier and to his friend Camarón de la Isla. -
RECOGNITIONS AND AWARDS
After a long musical career he became one of the most renowned guitarists in the world. With his album "Cositas Buenas", he received a Latin Grammy, and in that same year he also received the Prince of Asturias Award. -
DEATH
Paco de Lucía died as a result of a heart attack in the Mexican city of Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo. According to various sources, he was playing on the beach with his children when he started to feel bad.
