    On the first day of the battle the Union army had to hold off the Confederate army. The armies met beyond Gettysburg, but when the Union army saw that they were outnumbered they retreated through Gettysburg and up onto Culps hill.

    Not much happened at culps hill on the first day the battling took place north of Gettysburg. As they day grew old the Union army stationed there men on Culps hill. Since the Union was on Culps hill it made taking Cemetary hill extemely hard.

    The battle of Gettysburg wasn't only a hisorical battle but it was the bloodiest battle of the civil war and maybe even the bloodiest battle ever. The Confederate army had 28,000 of 75,000 missing or wounded. The Union army had 23,00 of 88,000 missing or wounded.

    General Longstreet was ordered to attack the Union, but Longstreet took too long to attack and did not attack till it was to late which gave the Union time to strengthen at there position. Because he had help from the Unions flank.

    Since Longstreet didnt like Lee's plan he held off on attacking till the afternoon. When the Confederates did attack they came on the Unions flank and so the Union started to retreat. The Confederates were now headed twords Cemetary Hill.

    The battle of Culps hill happened later in the night. As night arrived the Confederate army charged up the hill to flank the Union army. When the Union army saw this comming they retreated twords the other troops sending the other troops into battle not knowing where the enemy was because it was dark outside. Looks like they would need daylight to continue the battle.

    When the battle had begun Union army opened fire at the Confederates as they were charging up the hill. General Custer ordered his men to stop firing to save ammunition. The confederate general thought their cannons were knocked out. The Confederate army tried to proceed up the hill but got only as far as they did on the previous day

    While the Confederate army thought the cannons were knocked out General Picketts troops were saving ammunition, but those Confederates needed to be wiped out General Pickett decided to charge down the hill with 15,000 men bayonetes at front and proceeded to kill the confederates that were holding there position.

    I think that the Union army won the battle of gettysburg because they Confederate army ended up retreating in the end which gave the union army the victory at the bloodiest battle of the civil war. The Union only lost 23,000 men as the Confederates lost 28,000 men.

    In the Gettysburg adress President Abraham Lincoln states that all men are created equal and they they are in a great civil war. Lincoln says that the dead had not died in vein adn that no matter what happens people are people, and that they shall not perish from the Earth.
