    Thanet had 163 teen conceptions from girls under 18. 35.6% of these girls had an abortion.

    In 2000 there were 117 teen conceptions from girls under the age of 18 with 36.8% having an abortion There were 71 girls under the age of 16 who got pregnant.

    In 2003 Thanet had 119 conceptions from girls under 18 and 32.8% of these girls had an abortion.

    Thanet saw 59.8 pregnancies per 1,000 which was the 2nd highest in the South East. There were 120 conceptions from girls under 18 and, 35.8 % were aborted.

    Thanet had 155 teen conceptions from girls under 18’s , 43.2% had an abortion.

    Thanet saw 142 teen conceptions in girls who are under 18 and 35.9% were aborted.

  • THE C-CARD SCHEME

    The Kent C-Card scheme was launched in 2007 and provides young people aged 19 and under with access to free condoms in places other than sexual health clinics. Within each area of Kent, venues are recruited as Registration Points and/or Access Points for the scheme. All registration points also act as access points.     New data released in November 2007 using re-based population statistics has identified that between 1998 and 2005 a 10.3% reduction in teenage pregnancy was achieved across Kent, this is greater then the 9.7% decrease previously thought.   • GOOD NEWS FOR KENT - TEEN CONCEPTIONS DOWN

    The most recent under 18 conception data for 2008 has shown a reduction in Kent’s teenage conception rates. This is welcome news for the Kent Teenage Pregnancy Partnership, the rate reduction from 37.3 to 36.7 per 1000 females aged 15-17 means that Kent county has a - 12.8% change in rate since the beginning of the strategy in 1998.   • 'AMONG THE WORST IN THE COUNTRY'

    More people in Thanet die from smoking and cancer, teenage pregnancy and childhood obesity rates are among the worst in the country and life expectancy for men and women is lower. The Thanet figures show that more than 6,600 children are living in poverty, with nearly 30 per cent of the population living in deprivation compared to the national average of 20 per cent. Teenage pregnancy remains a serious problem with 139 girls aged 18 or under giving birth every year.

  • TEEN PREGNANCY FACTS 2010

    There were 148 under 18 teen conceptions in Thanet 37.5% of which lead to an abortion. Thanet’s Sex Education Survey said that 88.6% answered “YES” to ‘Have you had sex education lessons at school’, the highest topics covered were “sex in general”, “pregnancy” and “sexual health” Of the people who took the survey 35.8% said they “learnt a little bit" in the lessons while 49.6% gave answers on how sex education could be improved.

    Our priorities are: 1. To support the development of young people’s aspirations and life skills 2. To offer timely prevention, early intervention and support when and where young people need them 3. To develop the children’s workforce so that they are competent and confident to offer appropriate advice and support to children and young people 4. To seek and respond to the information and advice we receive from children and young people and their families and enable them to shape our services.

  • YOUNG PARENTS TEAM

    The Young Parents Team is based within the Attendance and Behaviour Service of Kent County Council and links to the Kent Teenage Pregnancy Partnership. Via outreach, the team offers support to young parents and their families and work towards the targets of the Kent Teenage Pregnancy Strategy. The Young Parents Team is working with 64 young parents aged under 20, resident in Thanet Local Authority. The total number of cases currently open across Kent County as a whole is 617.

  • TEENAGE CONCEPTIONS AND TEENAGE SEXUAL HEALTH

    Rates of under 18 conceptions have reduced by 13% since 1998/00 (for comparison, Kent County rate has reduced by 9.7%). With a target of 30.8 per 1,000, Thanet requires a further reduction of 43% from recent years’ figures in order to reach 2010 target.

  • KENT TEENAGE PREGNANCY STRATEGY

    Progress to reduce conception has been challenging, this reflects the national picture and is related to the broad and diverse nature of the risk factors related to teenage conception. However there is a determination to strive for lower rates of conception and to ensure that young people in the county are encouraged to aspire and given the opportunity to make an informed choice about early pregnancy.

  • NATIONAL TEENAGE PREGNANCY STRATEGY

    This report, coupled with the high rates of teenage conception in comparison to European neighbours, was the catalyst for the National Teenage Pregnancy Strategy. The aim was two fold: to reduce teenage pregnancy rates by 50%. The strategy began in 2001 and concluded in March 2011 and although the majority of local authorities have yet to achieve a 50% reduction England now has its lowest teenage pregnancy rate for 30 years

  • STUDENTS TACKLE TEEN PREGNANCY

    Four students from Thanet College are helping an NHS drive to reduce teenage pregnancy. Media Studies students at the college, have produced three short YouTube films and a Facebook page called ‘FML – Future, Money, Lifestyle’ – aimed at 14 – 21 year olds. The three films - called ‘Prospectus’, ‘Games’ and ‘Hindrance’ - tackle the issues of how unplanned teenage pregnancy can have an impact on your future, your finances and your lifestyle.

  • IPHONE APP LAUNCHED TO REDUCE TEEN PREGNANCY

    Health chiefs have developed an iPhone app to help reduce unplanned teenage pregnancy and improve the sexual health of the county’s youngsters. The Kent C Card app helps youngsters access free condoms, emergency contraception and information about getting treated for sexually transmitted infections. The app uses active maps to direct teenagers to the where they can get contraception and information. The new iPhone app has been developed by Canterbury-based company Tinderhouse.

  • TEEN PREGNANCY INCREASES IN KENT

    Maidstone and Thanet the highest rises with 23.4 per cent and 22.2 per cent respectively. Health bosses stressed, however, that in most cases the high percentage increases amounted to just a handful of girls. Thanet had 128 in 2008/09 and 148 in 2009/10. Thanet 58.8 per 1,000 people. NHS bosses have been working to try and drive down numbers by improving relationships and sex education in schools as well as other schemes.

    FACTS: 20% of teenage pregnancies are secondary. Teenage pregnancy is closely linked to aspirations and opportunities. Young people who binge drink are more likely to be sexually active. Almost twice the nice of young LAC (Looked After Children) become teenage mothers. If a young person does not return to education within a year of giving birth the likelihood is that they will not. Thanet has the highest number of teenage pregnancies and the lowest number of terminations.

  • MAIDSTONE BUCKS TEEN PREGNANCY TREND

    Maidstone has seen a rise in girls under-18 giving birth - bucking the national trend. New figures have revealed a 23.4% increase in the number of the teens falling pregnant, making the town Kent's second worst affected area. Thanet topped the list with 148 conceptions between 2009 and 2010, while Maidstone saw 108. Members of Maidstone communities overview and scrutiny committee have recommended the council approves a draft community plan for the next five years.
