    London tube and bus bombings
    Suicide bombers Mohammed Sidique Khan, 30, Shehzad Tanweer, 22, Hasib Hussain, 18, and Jermaine Lindsay, 19 detonate bombs at Aldgate and Edgware Road tube stations with a third bomb between King's Cross and Russell
    Square and final explosion on a number 30 bus at Tavistock Square nearly an hour later. Fifty two people were killed and more than 700 were injured

    On Thursday 21 July 2005 - only two weeks after the 7 July tube and bus bombings - four attempted bomb attacks hit London's public transport system. The explosions occurred at Shepherd's Bush, Warren Street and Oval stations and on a bus in Shoreditch. A fifth bomb was reported to be dumped before it was detonated

    Eight people were killed by a fertiliser bomb explosion is Oslo set by Anders Behring Breivik. Breivik then travelled to Utoya island, approximately 20 miles from Oslo, wearing a police uniform, where he opened fire on young adults at a camp on the island, killing 69 people

Mr Merah, who had French citizenship, said he was motivated by the death of Palestinians and military action by France abroad.

    Fusilier Lee Rigby was attacked by two men as he returned to his barracks in Woolwich. Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22 - both Muslim converts - were convicted of Rigby's murder in December 2013. At the trial Adebolajo handed a letter to witness which urged people to seek martyrdom: "If you find yourself curious as to why carnage is reaching your own towns then know its simply retaliation for your oppression in our towns."

    Five members of the Islamic militant group Al-Shabaab stormed the front entrance of Nairobi shopping mall, Westgate, with guns. The attack lasted until 24 September and resulted in 64 dead and 175 wounded,
  • Boko Haram kidnapping

    More than 200 girls were kidnapped from a school in the north of Nigeria in April. In May Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video statement that his group were behind the abduction of the girls and threatened to "sell" them in the market as "slaves". Over one year later there is still no sign of the girls.

    Read:'Hamas will pay' for teenagers' death, says Netanyahu The bodies of yeshivah students Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar and Naftali Frenkel were found on 30 June after the boys went missing on 12 June. Hamas claimed responsibilty for the boys' kidnap and murder. The killings sparked a cycle of violence that led to a 50-day war with Hamas in Gaza.

    An armed gunman took hostages in the Lindt cafe in Sydney on 19 December. Just before 3 a.m. on 20 December, police stormed the café and the siege ended in the death of two hostages and the gunman. The appearance of a black flag with Arabic script in the cafe window raised concerns of a possible terrorist incident.

The attack was carried out by French Muslim extremists who shouted ‘the Prophet has been avenged’. The attack was a reaction to the magazine's controversial depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

    Read:Three injured in attack outside Copenhagen synagogue In an attack many thought inspired by the Charlie Hebdo killings in France, two men - a film director at an event in the cafe and a Jewish man on security outside the shul - were killed and police officers were injured in a double terror attack on a cafe and a synagogue in Copenhagen.
