    Battle of Midway

    A Battle between the United States and Japan. The Battle was in the Pacific Ocean consisted a duel in between aircraft carriers. The U.S. was victorious. This ended up greatly hurting Japan's naval force in the pacific.
  • First Attack with Nuclear Weapons

    After successfully detonating the the Nuclear bomb, Trinity, in New Mexico, the first attack was on Hiroshima, Japan. On August 6th of 1945 over a hundred thousand civilians were killed nuclear bomb Fat Man. Three days later another nuclear bomb, Big Boy, was dropped on Nagasaki killing about eighty thousand civilians. By August 15, Japan had declared their surrender and on September 2 they signed the surrender.
  • The Long Telegram

    Sent by George Kennan, the Long Telegram was a lengthy telegram sent to the State Department. It was denouncing the Soviet Union because of its communism, saying that it was harming the world. Soon after the Iron Curtain was set up. The Iron Curtain divided Europe, separating the people in favor or against Communism.
  • Germany Split

    The western side of Germany was called the Federal Republic of Germany, while the eastern side, which was controlled by the soviets was called the German Democratic Republic. This created a lot of pressure between the Soviets and the Anti-soviets. Berlin was also divided in west and east Berlin. There even was a time in which the United States conducted an airlift to send supplies to West Berlin.
  • China becomes Communist

    After much conflict, Mao Zedong, the Chinese Communist Part leader, was able to defeat Kuomintang, the opposition. Communist China had a large impact on the cold war, having U.S.A as their main enemy. Kuomintang and all the anti-communist retreated to Taiwan.
  • Seoul, South Korea Fell to Communists

    After Japan had surrendered the division of Korea was prone to happen. Even after the attempts of the United Nations to unite the government, the Soviet Union didn't cooperate. Republic of North Korea, under communist power, and South Korea were created. Due to the victories in China, the Chinese supported the North Koreans in their attack on South Korea. After taking Seoul with a surprise , the South Koreans with help from the United Nations also attacked resulting in many more battles.
  • Sarah Keys Challenged Segregation on Public Transport

    Sarah Keys, an African American woman, refused to give up here seat to a white person. She ended up in jail, but she was the begging of a great movement which later was to be know as the Freedom Rides.
  • First Successful Hydrogen Bomb Test

    Creating a massive explosion, the bomb resulted in international alarms that made the USSR quicken their research to eventually create there bomb a year later.
  • Armistice Agreement was Signed

    After North Korea had taken over Seoul, the United Nations helped South Korea take back the city an move against North Korea. With the help of Chinese soldiers the UN was forced back. After thoughts of the United States using nuclear weapons they both agreed to peace through the Armistice Agreement. 1.5 million people had died up to this point of the war.
