Steps in the NH Special Education Process

  • Disability Suspected

    Disability Suspected
If there is an expected disability in a child, a referral can be made once the child is 2 and a half years old.
  • Referral Made

    Referral Made
Anyone including the parents of the child can make a referral. A letter of referral must be sent to the superintendent, special education director, classroom teacher, and principal. Within 15 calendar days of the referral being received by the school district, the IEP team must meet to determine if the school can meet the child's needs.
  • Evaluation

    Evaluation
Evaluations must be completed within 45 calendar days of receiving the parents written consent to begin testing their child.
  • Determination of Eligibility\Disability

    Determination of Eligibility\Disability
Once the evaluations are complete, the IEP team then develops a summary of the results. The a meeting is held to determine if the child has a disability that requires special education services. Upon request, the parents must be given the test results 5 days prior to the meeting.
  • Development and Approval of IEP

    Development and Approval of IEP
Special education services and the IEP team must begin developing an IEP within 30 days of the determination.
  • Determination of Placement

    Determination of Placement
It is time for the IEP team to determine the Least Restrictive Environment for the child. The school district is responsible for all costs once the parents approve of the placement.
  • Ongoing Monitoring

    Ongoing Monitoring
The monitoring of the child's progress is up to the parents, teachers, and service providers. They determine is the progress is strong enough to meet the IEP goals by the end of the year. The IEP must be reviewed at least once a year.
