  • Stage 4 Example

    Jack, age 6, was starting 1st grade at a new school. He was quiet and shy the first week of school. He struggled to create friendships the other children and was not engaged in the classroom. During recess the children liked to play unorganized soccer in the field by the school. Jack joined in and immediately outclassed his fellow students and scored several goals.
  • Stage 4 Example continuation

    His teacher saw this and praised him during the next class before continuing on with their studies. Jack was bolstered by the public commendation and became more outgoing and industrious at school as he no longer doubted himself in the school environment.
  • Stage 6 Example

    Jack decided to ask his girlfriend of two years to move in with him. Jack wants to take the next step in intimacy with his girlfriend and is strongly considering asking her to marry him. This is Jack's first relationship that has lasted longer than a year and he is deeply afraid of rejection. Jack's girlfriend decided to accepted his invitation on this date and moved in with him. Jack then developed a deeper relationship that helped him move away from isolation and into intimacy.
  • Stage 7 Example

    Jack organized a Thanksgiving day dinner for the homeless. He worked with a local shelter and helped facilitate donations from local churches and non-profits to help feed over 200 homeless from around the community. Jack sense of generativity grew from this event. Jack sees himself as part of the bigger picture and growth within his community. He sees the value he is adding to the world and this gives him a sense of accomplishment.
