  • Melinda gets raped pt2

But once everyone thinks that she called the cops at the party, her life falls to pieces. all her friends now hate her and her social life is out the window. This clearly has a huge impact on Melinda because it molds her into what she is in the story. A rude and angry girl that believes that no one in the universe is on her side. A girl that is having such a hell-like life, is willing to suicide. Her life literally changed just from this 1 event. This 1 event has had a huge impact on her.
  • Melinda gets raped pt1

This is the first event of the story, and the most important event that happens. THis 1 event creates the story as we know it. Ounce Melinda gets raped, her life is a nightmare. This is because not only was she freaking raped, she calls the police. THe problem with this is the fact that everyone thinks she called the police becasue of the party. Due to this, Melindas life becomes terrible. But what was her life like before? She had a lot of friends, was popular, and was doing great in school.
  • Art class

At the beginning of the year, Melinda takes an art class. This is special because, in art class, Melinda is finally at a place where she could finally express her emotions. Throughout the book, Melinda has zero places where she feels like herself, happy. But here in this art room, she feels happy. This art room also has a huge effect on Melinda because another reason, trees. Throughout the book, Melinda attempts to draw this tree which I think symbolizes how she attempts to get over the rape.
  • Thanksgiving

Throughout the story, we see how horrible Melinda's life is at school, but here, it shows how horrible her life is at home. Here its shown how her parents never have enough time for her and how the only reason they aren't divorced is that they love Melinda. Melinda really wants a happy thanksgiving with her family, but all she got was pizza because her family doesn't have time for her. This causes Melinda to have a suicide note and skip school just because she just wants her family's attention.
  • Heather pt4

In speak, Melinda makes a friend named Heather. Melinda says she is making a friend because she wants to look normal and not like a loser in front of everyone at the school, but I think that Melinda made that friend because she just wants a friend. Throughout the book, Melinda is really lonely and she just wanted a friend. But later on, Heather leaves Melinda Because Melinda is weird.
  • Heather pt5

This shows Heather was never a friend and was also just using Melinda and now that she can get better friends, she leaves. This affects Melinda and makes her believe there is no one in the world that likes her. Later on, Heather returns to Melinda because she needs help. This shows Heather always was just using Melindas loneliness and friendlessness for her own purposes.
  • Confession

Melinda's lips are ugly and swollen which we are constantly told in speak. But as she confesses and learns to speak and move on about the rape, the state of her lips improve which is what I believe her lips symbolize. Miranda finally tells Rachel and Ivy (Her friends) about the rape. Melinda has always been nervous about it, but now she has finally let go of the past and she has been able to move on. The rape has haunted Miranda for a long time, but she is now free of it.
  • Battle End

When the boy who raped Melinda hears she revealed the rape to the world, he traps Melinda and attempts to rape her again. But here, we see that over the school year, Melinda has found her voice. She found her ability to speak. So after a year of keeping quiet, she speaks and says no. The first time she didn't, but now she has. This may have the second biggest impact because Melinda now has changed, she grew. She says no to heather, and here she says no.
