American Social Welfare Timeline

  • 1690-1800

    Elizabeth Poor Laws,help was was given to those who fit the "worthy" poor requirements.
    -Orphans, elderly, and people w/physical disabilities

    1801-1860

    Many cities where expanding due to immigration, many cities couldnt afford to deal with a growing population so the government created residential institutions. The poor,mentally ill and orphans were housed there.

    1861-1874

    The Freedman's Bureau became the first federal social service program. The program was created to assist newly freed slaves, reunite w/their families & to provide medical/food rations

    1875-1925

    During the progressive workers rights were a main focus,which meant people were stating to focus on the safety of workers in the workplace.This was also a time of mass manufacturing.

    1926-1940

    During these years, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the 'New Deal' which he stated the New Deal wold help develop a new approach to to provide relief from the Great Depression .

    1940-1959

    In 1944, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act was created this helped fund education,training, employment, along with home & business loans to returning service-members.

    1960-1975

    In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed along with Voting Rights this mean that segregation, discrimination and denying people of color from voting was prohibited.
