Social Media Disruptions

  • #MeToo

    #MeToo
The #MeToo Movement began in 2006 when the hashtag, metoo went viral. This movement/social media disruption is still very prevelant in our world today. Because of the social media platform, Twitter, many surviors of sexual violence have a platform to share their story.
  • #BlackLivesMatter

    #BlackLivesMatter
The #blacklivesmatter movement started in 2013 after the death of Trayvon Martin's murder. The movement was aimed to bring light on the violence that Black communites face. With the hastag, twitter was a great platform for the movement to gain followers. The platform of twitter is a great way to share opinions and resond to others.
  • Pro-Life/Pro-Choice

    Pro-Life/Pro-Choice
Even though this movement started in 1973, I feel like it has picked up speed and more active followers in recent years because of social media. More marches for Pro-Life and Pro-Choice have gained media attention (or maybe just have caught my attention) more in the last few years. I think this debate is more on facebook than other social media sites. Facebook is a great way to share video, articles and photos.
  • March for Our Lives

    March for Our Lives
The March for Our Lives movement to end gun violence began after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. The movement gained hundreds of thousands of followers from the social media platforms: twitter, instagram and facebook. By sharing and posting the hashtag (#marchforourlives), it gave everyone the chance to share their opinion on what was happening.
  • Climate Change

    Climate Change
I have seen more disruptions about climate change in other countries more than here in America. More specifically: Australia and the U.K. I have seen many posts on instagram of people sharing their opinions and frustrations surrounding this topic. Instagram is a great way to share pictures of the protests and especially what is being effected by climate change.
  • #TimesUp

    #TimesUp
The #timesup movement started on January 1, 2018 to end sexual harassment in the workplace. Twitter was another great platform for this movement because it is an easy place to share opinions and hastags.
