Seven Stories of Mystery and Horror

  • 1.The pit and the pendulum

    The protagonist woke up in Toledo, in a cell. A torturer wanted to kill him with a sharp blade of a pendulum and also saw rats running through his hand.

    He tried to escape, so he reached out and took some of the meat that was on a closed table. When the rats came to eat that meat they also ate the rope. But they were afraid to see the leaf and fled.

    He smelled the smell of a hot hiron. And the air was so hot that he closed his eyes and thought his death was near. But suddenly he heard voices and shots, apparently the French soldiers had captured the city of Toledo and all the prisoners were free.
  • 2. First Visit

    The narrator’s friend moved to an island off the coast of South Carolina where he lives with his slave in a cabin and the narrator visits him and talks about a beetle.
  • 2.2. Second Visit

    The narrator visits them again and realizes that his friend’s slave is worried because he is wandering the island and writing strange calculations so the narrator thinks he is sick but he is not.
  • 2.3. The Golden Beetle

    They walk to a tree, where Legrand pulls out the gold beetle he drew at the beginning of the story. He gives him the beetle, which is attached to a rope, to Jupiter, then makes Jupiter go up and find the skull there. This time, the dig site is full of gold coins and colorful jewelry, and it also has some decaying skeletons.
  • 3. They interest in the case.

    Those involved have tried to keep the matter a secret, but a strange tale has been made public, leading to discussion and disbelief. P learned nine months ago that no one had been notified while on the cusp of death
  • 3.2. The hypnotics

    The experiment may have hypnotized his friend, but he has never fully controlled it. This could be due to tuberculosis. As doctors can predict the time of Valdemar’s death, they agree to meet 24 hours before his planned death.
  • 3.3. The death of Valdemar.

    Doctors say Valdemar should be allowed to die in his current state, as death will probably occur in a matter of minutes, but the narrator asks the same question again. So in response Valdemar’s mouth and eyes opened to form a horrible vision, and his body no longer appears alive, bit his tongue keep moving. With a rough, broken voice, Valdemar says he was sleeping but now he’s dead.
