    Parlimant passes the Grand Remonstrance
    During the Long Parliament, The House of Commons passed the Grand Remonstrance, a list of 150 greivances that they held against the King Charles I. The King rejected the Grand Remonstrance, attempting to ignore the power of Parliament. As he would come to find, his power was not great enough to counter that of Parliament, something that marked the decline of absolutist ideas of monarchy in England. This was one of the turning points that led to the English Civil War.
  • Charles I Executed

    Charles I Executed
    The execution of Charles I was confirmation of Parliament's power over the crown and was also symbolic in that the king- an absolute power- had been destroyed. Charles had made definite strides twoards an absolute monarchy and had come in to conflict with Parliament many times. His defeat by Roundhead forces was a large victory for Parliament over the monarchy, and confirmed the decreasing absolute authoriey of the throne.

    Oliver Cromwell becomes Lord Protector of England, marking the first time in English history that the monarchy has been abolished. Parliament's victory in the English civil war permanently decreases the stature of the monarchy for the future and shakes the foundations of traditional monarchy is England.

    Charles II attempts to expand religious liberties by issuing the Declaration of Indulgence, but Parliament refuses to expand taxes if the King does not retract the statment. Charles is forces to withdraw the Declaration, evidence of Parliament's growing power over the English throne.

James is the last monarch who tries to steer England twoards absolutism, and it is his actions that cause Parliament to invite William of Orange to invade the country.

    William of Orange arrives in England after being invited to invade the country by Protestant nobles to protect their "traditional liberties." This event marks the final downfall of traditional English monarchs and the dawn of a new system of governance.

    The Bill of Rights officialy established limited monarchy in England by intropducing powers that Parliament would hold over the throne. It made illegal certian practices of previous monarchs that limited the power of Parliament and allowed for William and Mary to become the co-rulers of England along with a strengthened Parliament.
