    Slavery occured in the South. They did laundry, gathered crops, and fed animals. As slaves grew older, their owners would become more strict and order them around more often. The North thought slavery was wrong and that it should be abolished.

    Slave Resistances
    A lot of slaves tried to resist through escaping and educating themselves. They escaped to the North and would be helped with those who lived there. The South did not want slaves escaping and wanted the escaped slaves to be returned immediately.

    European goods became more expensive so American consumers were more likely to buy American-made goods. The South hated it because they were losing money while both the North and Europe would be making money because the South had to spend their money on goods from either the North or European countries.
  • The Nullification Act

    The Nullification Act
    South Carolina declared they would no longer pay the illegal tariffs of 1828 and 1832. The act made it so that if a state did not accept a law, they did not have to follow it.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    California wanted to become a free state which upset the balance between the free and slave states. The slave trade in Washington, D.C. was abolished.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    California became a free state but abolitionists hated that Texas was still slaveholding. The Underground Railroad was continued with even more homes/stations that helped escaping slaves.

    Bleeding Kansas
    Many violent political meetings between free sates and pro-slavery resulted in the Border War. It took place in Kansas territory and near the state of Missouri.
  • John Brown

    John Brown
    John Brown led a group of 21 men on a raid of the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He also participated in the Underground Railroad and gave fugitive slaves land.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    During the election, there was acomplete split of who voted for which candidate. The South voted for Breckenridge who was for slavery and did not want to abolish it. The North voted for Lincoln who believed slavery was morally wrong.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    The South did not want the railroad. They thought it cost too much money and they could just use rivers. The North wanted it because it would make transporting goods easier.
