    Russia and Japan competed for control of Korea and Manchuria. They made a agreement over the territories. Russia broke it causing Japan to start a war by attacking the Russia at Port Arthur. News of repeated Russian loses sparked unrest at homes and led to a revolt in the midst of the war.

    The leader of Bolsheviks was Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanow and he adopted a name Lenin. He had traits that were engaging personality, excellent organizer and even ruthless that would help him command the Bolsheviks. In the 1900s he fled to Western Europe to avoid arrest by Czarist regime to maintained contact with other Bolsheviks then he waited until he could be safely return to Russia. He helped Russia to get out of the war.

A movement happened causing a new gov't establishing in Russia views by Karl Mark causing the industrial class of workers to overthrown Czar and soon to rule. In 1903 Russian Marxists split up Mensheviks and Bolsheviks over revolutionary tactics.

    200,000 workers and their families approached the czar's winter place in St. Petersburg for better working conditions and more personal freedom causing the solders to fire and kill a lot of people. It even provoked a wake of skirts and violence threw out of the country.

    Nicholas II drag Russia into the war even if they are not ready for it. 1915 Nicholas moved headquarters to war front to help his troops to victory. Home front supplies were dwinding and popeople were clamering for change and end the war.

    A self described "Holy man" who had magical powers. Czarina Alexandra fall under the influence of mysterious Rasputin. He made key politcail descisions and opposed reform measures and optained powerful positions for his friends even spread corruption throughout the royal court. In 1916 nobles killed him dued to fear him increasing role in gov't affairs.

    Local protest exploded (the march revolution) forced Czar Nicholas II abdicate his thrown cause the march revolution to win but didn't set up a strong gov't. Duma leader made provisional government or temporary gov't lead by Alexander Kerensky causing him to lose support from people. Then it caused others to be in charge like Soviets to get more power.

    Civil War Rages in Russia
    Bolsheviks had a new challenge is stamping out their enemies at home. In 1918 to 1920 civil war raged in Russia by several Western nations including US and they sent military to help the White Army. Russia civil war proved more deadly then the earlier revolutions and around 15 millions people died in 3 years struggle and the famine followed. The Red Army finally pushed Bolshevik rule by showing they were able both seize power and to maintain it even after war.
