First Trip
Amundsen joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition. The crew endured a winter for which they were poorly prepared. There was not enough clothes for everyone and barely any food, and their ship got stuck in ice.The reason why they suvived and escaped diseases like scurvy is because Frederick Cook hunted for fresh meat, providing the crew with food and the vitamin C needed to prevent scurvy. -
Northwest Passaage Expedition
Amundsen led the first expedition to successfully traverse Canada's Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He planned a small expedition of six men. Amundsen and the crew learned from the local Netsilik Inuit people about Arctic survival skills. The crew returned to Oslo in November 1906, after almost 3.5 years abroad. -
Ronald Amundsen gets through the Northwest Passage
His team reached Nome in 1906. Because the water along the route was sometimes as shallow as 3 ft (0.91 m), a larger ship could not have made the voyage. -
Ronald Amundsen sails to the South Pole
After hearing that Frederick Cook and Robert Peary had claimed to reach the North Pole, he decided to become the first man to reach the South Pole. He had to do few expeditions because of the extreme temperatures. Ronald used his dogs as a transport and fresh meat. -
